Book - Vliegen als een vogel, written by Wim Adriaansen.
'Like a lark towards the sun' was the headline of a newspaper in April 1930 with a report on the gliding flights of a small group of enthusiastic people on the beach and from the dunes near Noordwijk.
That is the beginning of gliding in the Netherlands as an organized sport. They are not the first. On July 28, 1908 Willem Schukking made the first jumps with a heavier-than-air aircraft over Dutch soil from De Stompert near Soest, with a glider pioneered by him, after an example of the Wright brothers in the United States.
The book describes the history of gliding from the beginning to practically the end of the twentieth century. From self-build to a club of own gliders in the period before the war to the restart after 1945.
From the training of young people, supported by the government, as a possible start of a career in aviation.
The story behind the development and construction of high-quality gliders such as the V-20 before the war and the KNVvL-491, T-10 and T-20 and the Sagitta in the years after.
Wim Adriaansen was a gliding instructor for more than fifty years. He made his debut in 1965 with a book on Sport in aviation and is the author of a number of textbooks on flight instruction and on the history of aviation.
He was a member and chairman of the Dutch Gliding Department and later a member of the Board of Directors of the Royal Dutch Aeronautical Association.
